Relation between Indentation Hardness and Impurities in Natural Quartz

Abstract
The effect of impurities on the hardness of crystalline Si02 samples has been investigated. Seven samples of differently colored natural quartz are adopted for this investigation. In these samples, major impurities, Al, Fe and Na, constitute more than 90 weight % of total impurity contents respectively. The hardness is measured by the Vickers rnicroindentation method on the plane perpendicular to the c-axis of these crystals. The hardness values are found to be decreased by the amount of 20% as the contents of impurity are increased in the range of 0.09?0.22 wt%, whereas the hardness is insensitive to the impurity in the range of 0.22-0.44 wt%.
